Itinerary:

  • Lukang enjoyed rapid growth during the 1700s and early 1800s but when the harbour here began to silt up, what had been one of Taiwan’s key trading settlements went into decline. The result is a town not quite frozen in time yet a place with an embarrassment of architectural and historical riches.
  • Our tour begins with a look at what’s now known as Lukang Old Street, too narrow for modern vehicles but lined with quaint houses built by the merchants and scholars of yesteryear. From there we’ll take in Longshan Temple, one of Taiwan’s most inspiring places of worship and likely the oldest Buddhist shrine on the island.
  • Beyond the town centre another religious building will grab your attention, however many temples you’ve already seen. Husheng Temple was built around a decade ago by the country’s leading glassmaker; consisting of more than 70,000 pieces of coloured glass, it’s a remarkable work of art.
  • Depending on the arrangements you make with us in advance, we can continue down the coast a short distance to see the oyster beds and fishing harbor near Wanggong before transferring back to your hotel or the transport hub of your choice.
