Itinerary:
- Now officially Taiwan’s no. 2 most populous city, Taichung has a well-deserved reputation for being a thoroughly modern metropolis with excellent dining and shopping. But dig a little deeper and captivating traces of the 1895-1945 Japanese period come to light. Taichung has an artistic side, too.
- The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts is an engrossing repository of works by local and foreign artists. More unusual is the highly photogenic Rainbow Village. Built after 1949 to house some of the many mainland Chinese soldiers who had retreated to Taiwan, the village was rather drab until a resident, entirely on his own initiative, began painting the walls with murals of whatever came to mind. It’s a unique sight.
- There are two major sights between central Taichung and the sea. One is Dajia Jenn Lann Temple, an ancient and colourful place of worship that’s also the starting point for what’s said to be the largest regular religious event in the world outside India.
- The other is Gaomei Wetland, a bird-watchers’ paradise during late autumn and winter and a splendid spot for watching the sun set over the ocean whatever the season. If time allows, before transferring you to your hotel or the transport hub of your choice, we may be able to drop by Fengjia Night Market.
- Billed as the largest gathering of ready-to-eat food vendors in Taiwan, it’s a droolsome place to end a day of sightseeing.
